The LEOPARD 2 A4 was developed further to meet specific customer requirements based on experience gained from the Balkan conflict and in Afghanistan. With it, the Canadian army gained the world’s first LEOPARD 2 with additional all-round protection from IEDs and modern hand-held anti-tank weapons.

Performance characteristics of the LEOPARD 2 A4

The LEOPARD 2 was further developed into the A4 to meet specific customer requirements based on experience gained from the Balkan conflict and in Afghanistan. The system components optimised to protect the vehicle crew have proven themselves among NATO partners in deployment in Afghanistan, and some appear in other variants. As a result, vehicle crews gain effective protection from mines, improvised explosive and incendiary devices and hand-held anti-tank weapons.
